Childhood's End

"Well," said Dr. Pent, and I knew that something was up. "Well, Simon," he said again, the stink of nerves rising whenever he shifted in his clothes. "How are we coming along?"

"Good," I said noncommittally, sitting up in bed and blinking against the orange morning sun. "Fine."

"Good," echoed Dr. Pent, nodding at nothing. He jammed his hands into the pockets of his labcoat and pretended to be inspecting some aspect of the wall above my head. "I'd like to talk to you about going home."

Bleary eyed and dream headed it took me a moment to recognize that by "home" Dr. Pent did not mean the ward. He meant the home of the man who had walked into the gate out of which I was born five and half weeks ago...

Simon of Space - a science-fiction novel by Cheeseburger Brown
Dear readers,

It's finally happened: the free version of this science-fiction novel has been taken offline in order to make room for the hard-cover printed edition from Ephemera Bound Publishing, on sale in stores and online beginning Valentine's Day, 2008.

I regret any disappointment. I kept the free version available as long as I could. Pleasure be sure to check out the new edition! See Cheeseburger Brown.com for more information and updates.

Love,
Cheeseburger Brown

P.S. You can read more of my free fiction via my weblog or in the complete story achives.

I'm getting irretrievably sucked into this story. I am moved by the imagery of Simon under his new bed. Thanks for sharing this as you go.

I checked this page at least a dozen times today before the new entry appeared, enjoyed immensely. Look forward to reading tomorrow's. Love the characters.

Hello, I must say I've been immersed into your story, look foward to read the next entry. I quite enjoy the lightheartedness within the story, yet you retain this air of complexity that makes you wonder, this story is not as simple as the narrator thinks :-)
Also congrats for "The Darth Side", I'm not a huge fan of fanfics, but that was very interestingly written!
Good luck and inspiration!

CBB -

Your writing contains such insight that I wonder where it springs from. From personal experiences? Do you spend time researching? Or do you just have a very active imagination? Or perhaps all 3??

Whatever the case, we are only a few posts in and I am engrossed already. Thanks.

I'm going to miss the colorful crew of the trauma ward, especially Crushed Head Faeda.

I liked her the most.

Dude!

You wow'd me with Vader's BLOG. You have sucked
me in once again.

Thank you!

I have been going through serious withdrawal
symptoms since the last Vader entry. Sigh.
I thought it was withdrawal from the subject-matter,
but I realize now it was withdrawal from the
writings of the author!!!

I suppose this is totally silly to say, but I've always
wanted to read (or write) a fanfic where Vader
actually survived, and Luke brought him down to
Endor. And then had to stash him away, and/or
try to get him a different-looking suit so he didn't
stick out like the evil Sithlord he was!

Then Leia would figure out he was still alive, and
there would be this big confrontation, where she'd
be torn betwen ripping his head off or running
off screaming!

Then something would happen, and Leia's life
would be in danger, and Vader would have to
expose who he was by saving her life. And then
there'd be all this awkwardness.

Ok, yes, I've thought this one through, many times,
with many permutations. What can I say: Vader's
my favorite character in Star Wars. :)

Anyway, I wish Simon well on his journey to meet
his family on his home world. :)

-- One of your weirder fans. :)

Mr. CCB

Have you ever read Gene Wolfe? Perhaps one of the Short Sun books or 'There Are Doors'? Your style is very similar.

I like the way you established a theme of self so early (IMO,as needed in this media). You do a great job of setting mood with few words, and subtly introducing the differences with our world. Thanks for allowing me to anticipate an otherwise dreary lunch hour.

For those who enjoy this blog, particularly Jesse's dilemma, and want additional reading try Wolfe's 'Latro in the Mist.' Think of it as Memento starring Hercules.

Terrific story, and I agree with ^anonymous when he said that you do a great job setting tone and introducing characters with very few words.

Something Nathaniel Hawthorne should have done, that verbose bore. ;o)

Is it possible for you to write anything that's bad. I loved your Vader blog and this is phenomenal. I wish that I could write like this. WOW.

wonderful as usual, but I have to say something to sithsnoopy. you can fanfic all you want about vader being alive, but his immortal force projection showed up with yoda and obi-wan at the end of Return of the Jedi, so there's proof that he is dead. anything you write will be a lie. what CBB did was not a falsitude at all, he used real events and real facts and built on it. that's what you need to do to create a truly captivating fanfic.
