Minotaur
At the bottom of the elevator shaft we found the lift car, smashed. Jeremiah helped me over the debris and we came out into a long corridor dimly lit by little yellow lamps. At intervals their light was aided by white orbs on metal stands, connected to the thick cylinder of cabling laid by engineers of the Citadel of the Recovery. Jeremiah strode down the silent corridor and I followed him, still chilled by his latest revelation about the untamed galactic wilderness beyond the borders of the Panstellar Neighbourhood...
Dear readers,
It's finally happened: the free version of this science-fiction novel has been taken offline in order to make room for the hard-cover printed edition from Ephemera Bound Publishing, on sale in stores and online beginning Valentine's Day, 2008.
I regret any disappointment. I kept the free version available as long as I could. Please do be sure to check out the new edition! See Cheeseburger Brown.com for more information and updates.

Wow Good Episode
The mazes remind me of the Zork games of long ago
Fan-tastic!
I almost had the first comment. >=) I'm getting closer and closer...
It appears that Simon IS somehow Terron, however, I must confess it is beyond my ken how this could be.
I will resist the temptation to speculate on the story and its players and just say - well done CBB.
This was a very exciting and well written installment and I enjoyed every minute of it! I am trying my best to patiently wait for another fix.
AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!Now I have to wait for the next chapter. You're killing me.
well, at the beginning when they saw the statue, i was sure that he wasn't volmash... but towards the end, i was sure he was... lol, i don't know what to think, i guess i'm more sure that he is, but i'm trying to figure out how, and my brain's hurting :P
ju571n
You are all forgetting that Simon was in the hospital for his "memory loss." They could easily have done plastic or genetic surgery to make him look like someone else. Maybe as Terron he knew the real Fell was a phoney, and that by becoming him, he would keep the phoney out of the way; it sounds like the Kamari's were bent on commercial domination, maybe they were secretly involved with Fell Pharm?
Also, I tend to think that CBB is making a lot of this up as he goes along. There are too many discrepancies in the early stories that the later narrative doesn't address, which sounds to me like CBB didn't quite know where he was going when he started...
And good work CBB, this is very enjoyable!
Holy Moly.... INCREDIBLE post CBB!!!
And I'm STILL trying to figure out who Simon really is! *LOL*
Dis-crepencies?
*wink*
I don't see any, only things that have not been revealed yet.
Like being fileted with a sharp piece of paper the whole weekend...this is even more enjoyable than Darth...
Well, at least Simon's got some time to kill now and can update his diary. Talk fast!
Great job again, CBB!
One question: why didn't Jeremiah use Secret Math on this latest group of Citadelites? Had Simon already outlived his usefulness? It seems like Jeremiah had already figured out Simon's decisionmaking pattern by the start of the second maze...
I'm guessing the code word to fire the Nightmare Cannon is xyzzy.
no, not xyzzy... 12345 "the combination an idiot would have on his luggage!"
seriously... i love it, but you're killing us here! :)
Totally speachless.
Duh Duh Duh.....
I still don't think that "Nestor" is Terron. But I do some what think that they were connected together. It was all about the money.
The Dr. said that Simon would recover his memory right ?
So, wouldn't all these things seem familiar to him? How much more must he see from his old life to remember?
The torture was unbeliveable and as much as I love reading this I had to fast foward through it. To many details!!
But,greatly written :D
sanna
By misrepresenting the motives of the enemy, by making theatre a more compelling power in politics than discourse, and by artfully catalyzing a population's overwhelming desire to believe in the righteousness of the Kamari way of life.
There are a few choice words with which 'Kamari' could currently be replaced. Another coincidence on the part of CBB, I'm sure.
This is probably a ridiculous idea, one that reading the story again, would probably disprove... but maybe Terron is a woman? and Simon is her husband?
Sorry for the ridiculous idea...
...cartoons about an anthropomorphisized comet who had a penchant for finding trouble among a pack of bullying asteroids.
:-)
However did Jeremiah allow himself to be "stolen" while the others slept, so long ago? Seems he's rather capable of fending for himself..
Anon,
Regarding the "how did Jeremiah let himself get kidnapped" question, I speculated in the comments a week ago that it was actually a test of Simon's loyalty to Pish (who would have insisted that Simon go after him). If Simon goes for Jeremiah, then he's a suitable bonding parent for Pish. If he doesn't then he's unfit and Jeremiah hunts him down and kills him.
Simon DID go after Jeremiah, and thus won temporary immunity from destruction. I'm just wondering how long that will last.
aw darn.
you know, i was really hoping Simon wouldn't be Terron. but i suppose Terron would be the only one who could get into the gun. so i suppose that while the overlying physical memories were erased, the underlying psyche, the bits that make simon simon are intact from terron...simon is terron through and through. but he's such a wonderful person, and terron is a monster?
that's the point you're trying to make, though, isn't it, about how anybody can be swept up into a political frenzy of war and do horrible things in it's name, even if they are the best person you've ever met.
TRH

Simon can't be Volmash.
In the middle of the fountain was a statue of a man with children and dogs playing at his feet, and sparrows alighted on his shoulders.
"Terron Volmash, I presume."
"Yes," confirmed Jeremiah
If that was Volmash Wouldn't Simon recognize himself?
Jeremiah can't lie.
So, unless they gave him a face change along with the whole mind wipe out thing he ain't Volmash.
Unless someone could come up with a resonable explanation as to how he could be???
sanna
is it me or is the word verifacations some times a bit hard to read...
R's to close to the N's to make it look like a M??
"Hurry!"
YEAAAARRGH! The SUSPENSE!!1
Perhaps Simon isn't Terron, perhaps he's the Reinhard Haydrich to Terron's Hitler.
Nah, the password for the Nightmare Cannon is 867-5309 !
AND,
Nestor - Terron
An anagram? Hmmmm enquiring minds want to know!
I turned around to face Jeremiah. "Lucky thing I knew."
Jeremiah walked up to me, his eyes on the rows of stone birds. "What would you have me say?"
"You know who I was."
"Yes."
"And I was not Volmash's engineer, was I? Nor his aide."
"No."
We stared at each other for a long moment. "I just want to hear you say it," I said.
Simon obviously has now concluded that he is Volmash. Jeremiah either believes that Simon is Volmash, or wants Simon to continue believing it. He is deliberately evasive. Why doesn't he come out and say it: "You are Terron Volmash."
Jeremiah did not flinch. After an interval he crisply pronounced, "Do not speak of mercy to me. Not you. Not ever."
A possible indication that Jeremiah truly believes or knows that Simon is Terron.
However, I can't help but get the impression that something is amiss. CBB clearly wants us to believe that Simon is Terron Volmash; but he doesn't come right out and say it. I wouldn't bet money against him being Volmash, but I also won't be surprised if things take a different turn.
Dave - nice one! Did you know the Go-Gos used to do that number before they went commercial?
As for the Simon/Terron thing, what if T.V. was the vanguard of "something wicked"? Jeremiah and the executives realize their vulnerability and feverishly work to fix it. Then Simon shows up out of nowhere, and they figure "here comes the next wave" and that Simon probably would be programmed to reignite the cannon - or worse.
That's not what I think, but hey, we're idly speculating until Monday, right?
Sanna - yeah, about one in four tries I get the verification phrase wrong.
This is beginning to remind me of Star Wars:Knights of the Old Republic 1... especially playing as light side. Great story, CBB! I loved Darthside, and I'm addicted to this blog... keep up the good work.
Dear Sanna,
"is it me or is the word verifacations some times a bit hard to read...?"
That means you are a robot.
Love,
CheeseburgerBrown
Another great chapter! It seems with every new chapter I have a new favorite chapter. The story just keeps getting better and better. The suspense is absolutely gut wrenching!
Favorite line so far is from the chapter "Flight Of The Neago". ""I don't feel safe," I shouted to it. "Is this a good time to panic?"" You could tell that line was coming after the robots repeated their message so many times but I still got a good laugh when it came.
I really hope a publisher picks up on this story. Or a TV executive. Maybe a game company? With all of the wonderful scenery and action sequences that would one hell of a game.
I haven't felt this excited about a story in a long time! Thank you for an amazing story CBB.
Leo
Nice Dante reference.
I got seriously scared when Simon lost Jeremiah. I do not get scared from fiction easily (especially when it's the main character in danger.)
I've thought about the possibility that something wicked might already be operating in the Neighborhood. Simon? Volmash? Fellcorp? the Citadel? We don't know enough. I'd guess that they are not doing anything here yet.
I wouldn't bet money against him being Volmash, but I also won't be surprised if things take a different turn.
THAT is where CBB wants us to be. And he's doing a good job.
I still say Simon is not volmash. Simon believes he is Volmash, and t are several systems to go, therefore simon is wrong.
Perhaps Fellcorp killed volmash, and tried to extract as much of his mind as they could, so they could find the doom cannon.
Then Nestor had it placed into his brain (after backing up)
Notice how everything simon does 'o impulse' leads him towards the cannon. From fleeing the hospital to killing faeda, to turning right or left in the maze. Often these impulses are preceded by the sight of a bird. These impulses are the Fellcorp computers at work. (except they are removed now, aren't they?)
"Nightmarish half-memories dabbed at my consciousness: a flight with rubber legs through dark halls, yearning to make it around the next turn, the beast's hot breath on the nape of my neck..."
This is not the memory of a man in charge of the maze.
Lots of people could get into the gun. Simon is just one entry in the puzzle's database.
Or perhaps I am just being stubborn.
Yeah, I tihnk this would make an even better game than a movie.
You can play as Simon, or you can play as Jeremiah, with all his abilities, and his restrictions.
I think that the word verification is just wrong sometimes. I've been denied even when I could read it pretty clearly. It might also be a time expiration issue. I usually write my post, then just get a new word, and verify it.
Great suspense in this post. The horror chamber is brilliantly described. Although it's not the same, it brough to mind a story I once read years ago, about a society in which one being was doomed to absorb all the pain and suffering of everybody else, for the good of the whole.
Glad to see CBB putting out amazing content instead of chatting with us!
Typo...
Another thirty degrees of circumnavigation brought us to another aperture, this one already wrecked for us __through__ obviously long ago, the bent doors covered in dust. I
Maybe supposed to be 'though' ??
ohh. i'm so torqued up waiting for the next chapter!
I also wonder about Duncan and just how much he knew/knows. I was hoping we would see him again.
There are going to be "holes" in the story when the reader sees it as it's written, instead of after several revisions and re-writes. At this pace, that's inevitable. Half the fun is seeing CBB come up with ways to tie it all in later.
I'm reading a highly recommended book right now, that went through all that time-consuming process, but when I go to lunch I find myself printing out the latest SoS entry instead of taking that book. That should tell us something about CBB's quality.
Yes, sanna, the word verification is hard to read sometimes.
Dear all,
This was supposed to be a double-length episode. I'm sorry that it's not -- but life gets in the way.
I now have less time than ever.
Monday's episode should be a doozy, though. Stay tuned.
Love,
CheeseburgerBrown
Great chapter. Reminds me of House of Leaves and Angel Heart.
Monday's episode should be a doozy, though. Stay tuned.
I hope it's not the last episode!
[hand trembles in antecipation of withdrawal symptoms
This is my latest stab at guess what will happen:
Simon was framed; Jeremiah sees Simon as Terron, but Simon was really a torture victim displayed in the nightmare cannon (thus his replaced leg and the nightmare of the minotaur in the maze). Simon will end up unveiling the real plot that the "rogue" executive was behind this all along, and defeating the wicked that comes their way.
Jessem Poll is really terron. So far both Simon and Faeda were at the hospital together, and both are involved in the cannon plot. Jessem is the only other character that was given much attention in the beginning, and he has been left behind thus far.
The "robots" that protected the cannon are really executives in disguise, like Jeremiah. Simon noted the organic crunch of the last robot that put up such a fight. This means the entire strain of executive is rogue.
That's all I've got.
Signed,
Too lazy to register.
Whoa. The verification for this one is tvmsg.
Can't wait, CBB. I like "Too lazy's" theories. We'll see.
To all who can't read the Word Verifications:
CBB is right, you're all robots. We're onto you now.
I like the idea of Simon being a torture victim, but it doesn't explain why the maze let him in.
Hey I ain't the only one that can't get in all the time.
I am not a robot :( ...
Although, I do have this scar on my head....
It would explain alot????
My head hurts soometimes.
And it would explain all these brain farts.....????
Well, I think that he could be a torture victim. The maze may have let him in 'cause he once entered through it.
"I believe this maze is an authentication device. It has been testing you."
Also, lilaena I went on your blog site and I read your story are you going to finish it ??
sanna
"I am a meat popsicle."
Yes Lil, discrepancies...although CBB has done a pretty bang up job of covering them so far. I won't get into listing them, as I don't want to ruin the suspension of reality for anyone, but assuming CBB gets a book deal and gets to rework it, I'd see a lot of the beginning changing.
For instance: If you own the hospital you are in, the nurses aren't going to call you "Simon" because they like that part of your name. They're either going to call you "Mr. Fell" or "Nestor" (if he was that sort of exec).
You're a [fill-in-the-blank]illionaire and you're in the hospital because your memory is gone. Your wife IS going to come visit you (she can afford the transport ticket).
The hospital will have a LIMO with your escort pick you up and take you to the "airport" not let you idly stand by the front door waiting for a "taxi" and allow you to run off.
Not that it hasn't lead to an interesting story, but the beginning needs to be patched up to match the current direction of the narration.
Not that I'm not seriously enjoying story...
Y'all are getting warmer...
I'm with Too Lazy on the "Simon is a creation of Fellcorp and the executives". I think that the executives think that humans are too weak to stand up to the "something wicked". They also fear that the "something wicked" can corrupt humans (e.g. T.V.) to do things that can ruin the entire Panstellar Neighborhood, so they must either remove or isolate humans. In order to do this they need to have a race of executives that are impervious to the Nightmare Cannon. That is the reason they're bringing Pish along. It's also the reason they're implanting computers in humans' brains - trying to inhibit succeptibility to influence of "something wicked". But how far do they need to go in messing with humans' brains? Is it as far as the virtual "putting us in zoos"?
I think Simon was a creation of what they could put together to try to lead them to the Cannoli (kidding). A one-of-a-kind hack. That's why Jeremiah and Olorio never say who he is: he's got what they know of T.V. in him, but he's not T.V. Perhaps T.V. had crystals like Faeda or they caught him and he had a self-destruct mechanism that butchered his brain and they copied that to create Simon.
That or it's a straight-up plot by executives to get rid of humans. CBB is so skilled that I can't decied which theory is right. Occam's Razor would say the latter, but we'll see.
Inhales REALLY DEEPLY to hold breath for Monday!.!.!.
"He said, 'Atrocities can be justified in the defense a great union, for the question can be framed as choosing the lesser of two evils.'"
Should be:
"...in the defense of a great union..."
Beyond that - wow.
I can't decide whether I wish this had been the double-length episode promised, or if I prefer the delicious agony (almost suitable for broadcast through the Cannon) of waiting until Monday for this scene to be resolved. I do pray that CBB isn't done with this tale yet, but I also know that it will end when he says it's time - as Fanny says in Mansfield Park, "When the moment arrives when it is perfectly natural, and not a second sooner...".
Oh, and Mark, I think the story you were trying to remember was Ursula LeGuin's The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.
DEAD TREE EDITION!
DEAD TREE EDITION!
I have my credit card in hand right now.
Goddamnit Matthew you continue to amaze me. How will I survive until Monday? Gah!
To those who think this ends in the next episode:
Bwahahahahahahahahahaha!
By CBB's own count way back in an early comments section, we have at least one more world to visit. I'm feeling like Dirty Harry here - in all the excitement I can't remember whether CBB said there were 3 more worlds to visit or 4 (at the time of the comment). So you have to ask yourself: do you feel lucky, punk?
I don't think the rouge exectuive/strain is still alive. Jeremiah said 'we will not fail that way again'or something, which he couldn't really say if there were rouges.
Jessem poll is an interesting possibility, but why would volmash go to samundra?
The robots were just robots.
A) There were five of them.
B) They were dedicated combat machines, Jeremiah is general purpose.
C)Jeremiah may have limited himself in order to make sure Simon wasn't injured.
D) He still won, and only suffered cosmetic damage to his 'after market' carapace.
How would one executive, protecting a human, take on five rouges? and why would they just wait there?
What do you suppose would happen if you shot Jeremiah in the eye?
How do you feel about CBB is right, you're all robots?
The word verification might be bad, but at least it's not a deadly maze.
If the nurses have a union, and Randa has seniority, she'll call you anything she wants.
I think that the other hole might patch themselves once we know who simon was.
If the executives wanted to get rid of humans, they could just use the math. *BANG*
There are more worlds to visit, and tons left to do! Simon's kids, Olorio, Queen of Space, Volmash, Cure Glory?
Plus somehow Pish still has to be raised. Is Glory gonna do it?
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Perhaps Simon was another politician on metra, a rival of Volmash but not much better. Not an aide or engineer, but still complicit in The Horror.
You are in a maze of twisty passages. You are likely to be eaten by a grue. A dwarf is in the room with you. He throws a knife at you and misses. There is a chirping bird nearby. [And in the prior room was a wicker cage, and a bar.... and uh-oh, here comes the cave pirate to take your treasure! :) ]
Oh, yeah. One more thing.
HOLY COW HE CAN'T REALLY BE THE EVIL VOLMASH! AHHHHHHH! I KNOW I SAID HE WAS PROBABLY VOLMASH IN SOME POST IN THE PAST, BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Wow. It's like if you suddenly realized that you were Darth Vader, after extreme reconstructive and cosmetic surgery! "I did what? To whom? What do you mean I tortured my own daughter? What do you mean I strangled my wife and effectively caused her death?? What do you mean I killed my former best friend and mentor?? No!!!!! It's impossible!!!!!"
Considering what getting her memory back apparently did to Crushed Head Faeda, let's hope that poor Simon's memory remains thankfully un-intact. :(
Poor Simon!
PS CBB:
The TOC needs updating
Im so glad someone else said what I was thinking about KOTOR!!! Great work
Hi CBB,
I'm hanging on to the edge of my seat with this episode. I don't/can't believe that Simon is Volmash. I refuse to believe it, in fact, and the fact that the robots attacked them justifies my doubt about his Volmashood, so I'm ok for now :)
Meanwhile, a couple of corrections:
Jeremiah I slunk on steadily,
becomes:
Jeremiah and I slunk on steadily,
This second one I'm not sure of, because in its current form it could make sense, so is this:
this one already wrecked for us through obviously
supposed to be:
this one already wrecked for us though obviously
?
Thanks again,

It will be completed, my writing partner is ... well I need to nag her more. ;)
ty for reading, btw, it is much appreciated!

Phy, I haven't played it, but I did watch someone play it over Christmas vacation [my company takes a week off at Christmas]. My husband and I had a friend over who was recovering from surgery.
He played the game almost non-stop. My husband and I often helped him out, especially with the puzzles, as his brain was a little addled from the pain killers!
He played Revan as a good guy. After he finished the game, he was thinking about replaying it where Revan decides to be evil again.
So yeah, I know what you are talking about. :)

Someting awesome this way comes! If thetitle is up, the content is minutes away...
If Metra was trying to make its mark in the Panstellar Neighborhood through broadcast content, does that make it Planet Hollywood?
Hey, CBB...
do you delete comments in which the people guess too close to the truth of the story for your comfort, or is it simply because they were vulgar?
just wondering

Teddy,
Did you have a comment deleted that was a good theory? If so, fire it off again now! With a new post about to come out, he won't notice!
Yeah, every time I put out my theory that captain ting was Nestor's lover, it gets hidden!! It's a cover-up!
Seriously, I 'the author' delete mine when I have a typo, or need to change something. I think I did two in this thread. (you can tell who they belonged to in the comments on the main story page.)
As far as I know, when CBB deletes something, it's entirely invisible.
Usually when a blog comment is deleted by the blog owner, there will be a message that says "This post has been removed by the blog administrator."
With the blog software that blogger uses, I'm not sure that blog owners can delete a comment without this message appearing in its place. But...I could be wrong!
it's 130 in the morning...
i'm reloading the page every 10 to 20 minutes...
i really want that first comment...

Dear Teddy,
I have erased one comment due to excessive vulgarity. I have erased one comment due to causeless rudeness. I have deleted dozens of comments due to their being spam.
When I delete something, the message left behind would credit the action to the "administrator" -- when it says "author" that means the person who authored the comment deleted their own words.
I would never remove a comment just because it contained a good guess.
I'll see what I can do about the next chapter once I get a couple of meetings out of the way this morning. I'm in thick production on two shows at once, and there's a lot of pointless, time-wasting yapping to do. (Or to pretend to listen to, as I smile and nod and try to think up SOS details.)

P.S. The word verification for this comment looks suspicious like "bad wolf", from which I take it that I'm being hunted through time by a pandimensional blonde. Either that or I've just been watching too much TV lately. Ah, bless the Beeb.
Everytime i see the title of the chapter i see "MANURE"

Oh god, I'm jonesin' here, hook us up CBB.
Seriously, good work. I'm loving it.
Just another theory: I think Simon is the renegade executive. It explains the "don't speak to me of mercy" comment on Jeremiah's part and would help to explain how he might know of the route to the Nightmare Cannon.

But we've already seen Simon injured numerous times, and no fixers came out of him.
Dear DoD,
Okay, I'm back. What a tedious morning. A spot of lunch and then I'll finish today's post.
My day job -- such as it is -- is to make corporate propaganda. I'm currently booked working on two events at the same time, getting up at crack o'clock and collapsing after midnight.
Yes, it's true: I make Japanese luxury vehicles fly for a living.
I hope to one day give up the glamour of sitting at my desk clicking a mouse for the glamour of sitting at my desk typing all day, but as it stands right now typing just ain't payin' the bills.

Oh, Indrax, just an FYI, Rouge is a color, RoGUE, is a scoundrel! *LOL*
COME ON CBB! Post already!
Another possibility about Simon's origins.
Dr. Pemma talking to Simon in "Lick A Bet Outta Hell":
"Your genes. We have your genes on file. When you were scanned your sampled code was matched up with the library file: Nestor Simonithrat Fell."
What if Nestor is actually real person, and Simon is a cloned version of that person based on the genes that are on file? Maybe he's been cloned and then imprinted with some of Terron's memories?
CBB/Marketing Genius,
Will we see a chase scene aboard a late model Scion in a future Simon Episode?
I have a 12-day-old little girl. If you don't post soon, and before I leave work, my wife will be filing for divorce after my refusal to assist in the care of the wee bairn so that I might read your latest installment as soon as its posted.
